Site Reliability Engineer

San Francisco

Formation is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to support the development of our product. Our platform learns and adapts to people's preferences, habits, and feedback—orchestrating highly relevant experiences that are truly unique to each person. Our vision will change the way people engage with their favorite brands across multiple industries, be it retail, finance, or healthcare.

This is a software engineering role on a cross-functional team comprising software engineers and operations specialists.

What you will be doing

As an engineer on this team, you will:

  • Work on tooling and systems that help our internal teams move quickly and safely while being more productive and confident in their software.
  • Ensure our operational environments are reliable and robust by construction.
  • Be responsible for the full lifecycle of your code, from design to delivery and deployment.
  • Collaborate with other engineers in a team environment. We often work closely together on the same problem, communicating frequently throughout the day.
  • Participate in and help improve our processes. As a team we place heavy emphasis on visibility of work, peer-review, and knowledge sharing to help us produce quality software.
  • Help define and implement software reliability standards for other teams, leading by example.
  • Be empowered to reduce maintenance and operational burden over time.
  • Things you might work on include automated infrastructure, deployment management and enabling continuous delivery across the company.

What we’re looking for

You may have an interest in (not necessarily experience with) some of the following:

  • Functional programming
  • Immutable infrastructure
  • Developer-focused tooling
  • Continuous deployment
  • Building reliable and robust systems

What is nice to have

  • An appreciation of healthy engineering processes such as code review and testing.
  • Owning and operating a managed service end-to-end
  • Collaborating with a variety of business functions to establish infrastructure and reliability requirements
  • Critically evaluating (not necessarily using) the latest technologies in cloud computing and systems
  • Diving deep into complex systems, developing a deep understanding of why things are the way they are before attempting change
  • A working knowledge of operational environments, or a willingness to learn how your software runs and what it takes to operate it.
  • Experience with AWS or more generally with Linux production environments is a significant benefit.
