Lead Infrastructure Engineer

Formation is seeking a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to support the development of our flagship product. As a Lead Systems and Infrastructure Engineer at Formation you’re well versed in modern infrastructure and operations technologies and select tools based on what is best for the team, product and organization. If those tools don’t exist, you’ll roll up your sleeves and build them. At Formation “DevOps” isn’t a role, but an approach to collaboration. We work in small, self-sufficient teams with the shared goal of delivering excellent software anchored in an agile culture of quality, delivery, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement cloud infrastructure systems using best available ops tools (eg AWS, Terraform, Datadog, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Unify metrics, monitoring, auto-scaling, automation, orchestration, service management, and deployments
  • Utilize iterative and agile approaches to promote better working relationships and product delivery
  • Drive and own the infrastructure team’s technical roadmap
  • Evaluate technical choices to empower the engineering team to deliver
  • Help grow our engineering team and provide technical leadership

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in related field (ie Computer Science, Math) and 6 years of relevant experience
  • Extensive experience with cloud services platforms (strong AWS preferred: OpenStack, Azure, Google Cloud are nice additions)
  • Demonstrated programming proficiency in some combination of Python, Bash, Scala (other functional languages also desirable)
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux-based operating systems
  • Knowledge of standard tools to configure and launch infrastructure (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Chef, Puppet, Ansible)
  • Knowledge of database architecture, high availability, failover, and performance tuning eg Postgres
  • Proficiency with performance analytics tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic)
  • Experience with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) using tools such as Circle CI
  • Experience implementing security policies using tools such as ThreatStack
  • Experience designing and implementing a Disaster Recovery plan
  • Demonstrated infrastructure debugging skills
  • Able to provide technical leadership for small, focused teams

Bonus Points:

  • Prior experience with enterprise SaaS products
  • Expertise in secure network design and implementation
  • Experience implementing monitoring, alerting, dashboarding and metrics collection
  • Have scaled up small deployment to large deployment
  • Knowledge of Haskell build tools (Nix, Hydra, Stack)
  • Experience with SOC2 and similar security certifications
